Sirocco (2011)

Description

My recent recording, Sirocco, includes solo works that I have particularly enjoyed performing over the last few years. Although each one is different in character, they all share a strong jazz, ethnic or folk music influence. The featured composers, who are also guitarists, have brilliantly illustrated the many facets of the guitar – from the use of its rich textural palette to the exploration of new harmonic territory.

With regard to recital performances, I have always sought an eclectic repertoire that transcends various musical genres, perhaps reflecting my tendency to “fall” for a specific piece rather than remaining loyal to any particular composer or musical style. Through my recording selections it was my intent to capture a sample, if only a small one, of the rich and diverse guitar repertoire that is available today.

Reviews

This is one of those rare guitar albums where flawless technique is trumped by even finer musicianship.

John Terauds, Toronto Star

Here is a delightful solo recording by Canadian guitarist Sylvie Proulx featuring accessible yet virtuosic contemporary music for everyone….Proulx is a technical and stylistic wizard on the guitar…Her take on the Spanish musical influences of Andrew York’s Sirocco are personal yet bang-on accurate.

My first nomination for next year’s (2012) Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber Ensemble is guitarist Sylvie Proulx’s Sirocco. Ms. Proulx’s technique and musicality are a joy to experience.

Stanley Fefferman, Showtime Magazine

Proulx’s playing is gorgeous here: a ravishing tone, exquisite phrasing and pacing, and no technical limitations whatsoever. Yet the spontaneity is always there. This is very satisfying.
